Introduction and types of computers.

A computer is an electronic machine, which takes, inputs data instructions into it, store it, process it and produces output in desired form.

Characteristics of computers :-

*Never makes mistakes.

*A smart machine.

*Work very fast.

*Never gets tired.

*Stores many things like words, numbers and pictures.

*Can work different tasks as it gets order from you.

Types of computers :-

1. Analog computers:- Analog Computers uses Analog signals that are represented by continuous set of voltages, used in scientific research centres, hospitals and flight centres.


Note:- Analog computers are faster than digital computers.








2. Hybrid Computers:- Hybrid computers combines both analogue and digital features and operations.




3. Digital computers:- Digital computers uses electrical input, represented by 0 and 1 or OFF and ON state. Digital computers recognize data by counting signal of (0 to 1).


Note:- Digital computers work only on 0 and 1.

Types of digital computers:-

* Mini Computers:- Faster than micro computer CPU, Speed approximately 500 instruction per second, used in payroll, invoicing etc.



* Mainframe computer:- They is very large computer with high capacity of main storage and is used in big companies, banks, etc.



* Super computer:- Super computer is that where in many computation can be performed simultaneously and used in scientific applications like weather forecasting.


Micro Computer:- Smallest in size as it uses micro processor or used as home computer.

Types of Micro computers:-

1. Personal computer:- These Computers are used by one person at a time as his/her own personal computer. He/She keeps his/her data and the programs required by him/her on the computer.


2. Portable computer:- Portable computers are those Micro computers which can be easily carried around. All these computers use LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) for reduce weight and power requirement.

Types of Portable computers:-

* Laptop:- Laptops use battery power and can be used on the lap as name suggest "Laptops". It is ideal for users who have to work in traveling.


* Note Book:- Note Book is smaller and has lesser capacities in comparison to laptop. It can easily fit into any briefcase, so ideal for users who are frequent-flyers and life-on-the-road.



* Palmtop:- Palmtop is touch screen and memory card for storage. It is much smaller than notebook and uses personal organization tools. It is ideal for the users who use machine day-today activities.



* Tablet PC:-Tablet PCs are mobile computers that are larger than a mobile phone or can say wireless personal computer (PC). They have the touch screen technology.
